Stainless Steel Industry Awards

To inspire bold thinking and encourage worldstainless members to push the boundaries of development, worldstainless annually presents four Awards celebrating the most innovative achievements in the stainless steel industry. These distinctions shine a spotlight not only on outstanding company accomplishments but also on the creative ideas that help drive our sector forward.

The Market Development Award recognises highly original market‑driven concepts—initiatives that champion bespoke stainless grades, demonstrate strong global market potential, and deliver meaningful environmental benefits. Whether through conserving scarce resources, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, or lowering lifetime maintenance costs, these developments show how stainless steel can shape a more sustainable future.

Complementing this, the Technology Award honours breakthrough concepts that advance the production or application of stainless steels. From pioneering manufacturing methods to transformative in‑service uses, this category celebrates the technical ingenuity that strengthens our industry’s capabilities.

Safety remains a cornerstone of responsible industrial practice, which is why the Safety Award highlights practical innovations that make workplaces safer. The jury looks for measures that reduce incidents, introduce transferable countermeasures, and enhance worker skills—initiatives that directly contribute to safer environments across the stainless steel value chain.

Finally, the Sustainability Award recognises developments that deliver measurable environmental progress. This includes reducing operational emissions, lowering production energy intensity, improving material efficiency, investing in environmentally positive processes or products, or strengthening environmental management systems. These efforts demonstrate how stainless steel companies can lead the transition to a cleaner, more resource‑efficient world.

Together, these four Awards celebrate creativity, responsibility, and forward‑thinking leadership—qualities that continue to elevate the stainless steel industry and inspire new ideas year after year.

Market Development Awards

In 2025, in the category of Market Development, the Gold Award was presented to Acerinox for their Vertex Keg; the Kegs are made of duplex stainless steel. Their keg, the world’s first and only duplex stainless steel beverage container, is up to 30% lighter and up to 30% greener than a traditional keg, making it easier to handle and transport. Beer has traditionally been transported in kegs made from 304 stainless steel. Instead, they explored using duplex stainless steel, known for its superior corrosion resistance and its ability to reduce material usage and weight. They overcame several challenges, such as difficulties in deep drawing, precise control of welding parameters, material anisotropy, achieving the correct balance between strength and weight to pass the conventional keg tests, and applying optimal pickling process parameters.  .

The Silver Award was for Nippon Steel Corporation for the Lining on water release equipment of the Aso Tateno Dam and the Bronze Award went to POSCO for its Safety grating with high strength stainless steel.

Technology Award

In 2025, the Gold Award in the Technology Category was for POSCO for their development of Ultra grain-refined austenitic stainless steel with high strength and good corrosion resistance for battery case. A new austenitic stainless steel for electric vehicle battery parts is designed to promote grain refinement, with processes optimized based on austenitic stability, cold-rolling amount, and annealing temperature. In the EV market, cost-competitive materials with excellent properties are key to bridging the EV chasm. To address this, innovative high-strength stainless steels with new design concepts are essential. Ultra grain-refined stainless steels offer high strength and corrosion resistance, while reducing hardening time and weight─contributing to energy savings and extended product life. These benefits further improve the competitiveness of stainless steel in the EV industry.

Acerinox was the winner of the Silver Awards, for their JAG Plate Heat Exchangers. And the Bronze Awards went to POSCO, for their Lightweight roofing solution made from high-strength stainless steel for high temperature, high humidity and corrosion environments.

Safety Award

In 2025, for the Safety award, the Gold Award went to POSCO for Smart Fire Monitoring System. The implementation of the system has significantly improved early fire detection and extinguishing in the Coil Grinding Line, raising the early extinguishing rate to 71%. This advancement has enhanced workplace safety, minimized equipment damage, and improved employee satisfaction, resulting in a high return on investment. Frequent fires are caused by mist from grinding oil used to cool the stainless strip, which not only ignites easily but also contaminates auxiliary equipment. Over two years of operation, the system successfully enabled early intervention in 5 out of 7 incidents, including challenging cases involving enclosed equipment where camera installation was not feasible. These results highlight the critical importance of rapid fire detection and immediate response.

Acerinox was the winner of the Silver Award, for their New developments in Psychosocial management for a steel plant. The Bronze Award went to North American Stainless for their Caster Area Stopper Arm.

Sustainability Award

In 2025, in the Sustainability Category, the Gold Award went to Nippon Steel Corporation for the Application of duplex stainless steel to the cargo hold of general cargo ship Toshinmaru. In this case study, duplex stainless steel and stainless steel clad plates, consisting of duplex stainless and carbon steel, were adopted for the cargo holds of general cargo ships to reduce maintenance burden, improve corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and life cycle cost. In Japan, coastal shipping plays a critical role. However, cargo holds made of carbon steel with anti-rust coatings face frequent wear and rust from diverse cargo, requiring regular repairs and large-scale maintenance to address aging-related deterioration. By eliminating coatings and employing stainless steel materials such as SUS304 and duplex stainless, this approach aims to reduce environmental impact, enhance durability, and support the long-term sustainability of coastal shipping, while also offering high price stability and creating new demand for stainless steel plates.

The Silver Award in this category was for Acerinox for the Decanting and recovery plant for industrial oils. The Bronze Award went to Nippon Yakin for their Environmental Improvement and Efficiency Enhancement in Slab Penetrant Testing Work.
